  1. Roman Catholic order of friars founded 1215
  2. by St Dominic; they are also known as Friars
  3. Preachers, Black Friars, or Jacobins. The
  4. order is worldwide and there is also an order
  5. of contemplative nuns; the habit is black and
  6. white. The first house was established in
  7. Toulouse in 1215; in 1216 the order received
  8. papal recognition, and their rule was drawn
  9. up in 1220-21. They soon spread all over
  10. Europe, the first house in England being
  11. established in Oxford in 1221. The English
  12. Dominicans were suppressed in 1559, but were
  13. restored to a corporate existence in 1622.
  14. Dominicans have included Thomas Aquinas,
  15. Savonarola, and Las Casas. In 1983 there were
  16. 7,200 friars and 4,775 nuns.
